The
Stephen M. Ferro Spirit Award will be presented annually to a player
participating in the Islandwide RH League who best exemplifies the spirit of
Stephen M. Ferro. Criteria will focus on fairness, trustworthiness,
honesty, commitment, determination, competitiveness and overall love
for the game of inline hockey. Two additional scholarship awards will
be presented this year, but only one player will receive the Stephen M.
Ferro Award.
IN MEMORY OF STEPHEN M. FERRO
To Stephen, inline hockey was the only game to play. Stephen was
not the best inline hockey player in the league but his teammates
relied on and admired his work ethic, hustle, teamwork and dedication.
These are the things Stephen will be remembered for.
His first games were on the street with his best friends, playing
until it became dark. Then, it was on to the rink with the
Bellmore-Merrick Roller Hockey Association. There he made many close
friends as they saw the way he loved the game. He also played travel
roller hockey with the Bellmore Devils and the Bulldogs. Stephen picked
up a nickname from his roller hockey coach - they called him "Killer"
because of his fearlessness, in spite of his small stature. Stephen
loved hockey so much he even played i ce hockey for his HS team
"Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs".
Stephen was an all-around player even though he primarily played
defense. If he was needed to play offense, he would do it at a moment's
notice - it wouldn't bother him as long as he was on the hockey rink.
Let his name live on for the love of the game: Stephen M. Ferro.
Thank you IHSRH for this memorial of our son - Mark, Cherrily and Laura Ferro.
 An
achievement award is given to the one unique individual who stands out
above the rest. This award is dedicated each year to someone who is
committed to excellence, leadership and integrity. This player shows
tremendous contribution to this league, to his team and to his school.
He has given his time and effort throughout the year in a wide array of
activities.
The Jeffrey Allen Mosenson Islandwide RH Achievement Award is presented annually in his memory to a player in the
Islandwide
High School Roller Hockey League that best exemplifies the qualities of
Jeff. Jeff was a referee in our league for several seasons.
He was one of the best and most professional referees who ever refereed
an inline roller hockey game. He was always respectful of the
players, coaches, fans, and was a most caring and gifted person who
spent every minute of his life making the world a better place.
He was blessed with an uncanny knack of putting everyones needs before
his own and making an encounter with who ever he met a life altering
experience.
Jeff was one of the
best all round athletes to grow up on Long Island, was a terrific
student, a world traveler, and a great friend to everyone. His
life was cut short on
January 28, 2003 in a car accident on an icy road in
Brookville ,
NY . No matter what Jeff did, he always excelled.
Whether it was as a tremendous hockey goalie, being selected Top Gun
as a pilot at Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 15, or
being selected as the trainer for the USA basketball team in the 1999
Maccabian Junior Olympics in Europe, or as an All-star baseball player
in the Syosset Baseball Association, or being selected the trainer for
the Eastern Collegiate Roller Hockey Association All Star Team in Las
Vegas for the National Championships (2002), Jeff was always modest.
Jeff never lost
sight of his place on this earth. And that was just saving lives
as a volunteer fireman and emergency medical service person that worked
and/or volunteered at 7 different fire departments and ambulance corps
from the age of 13. He was also the recipient of the
Jericho Fire Department Probationary Member of the Year Award (2001) and
Jericho Fire Department Member of the Year Award (2002)
The Jeffrey
Mosenson Memorial Fund has been established to provide training and
